On Sunday 30th September, SPACE Studiosin partnership with The Arts Catalyst host BUG PARTY as part of national arts initiative The Big Draw. The event is part of a wider project by American eco-artist Brandon Ballangée. Combining science and art in his investigations of insect life and amphibian species in the UK, Ballangée's exploration of biodiversity and outdoor installation is the primary inspiration for this year's drawing workshop. All age groups are invited to take part exploring, drawing and relaxing at this free event.
Brandon Ballangée will introduce participants to local insect life. His Love Motels for Insects sculpture at SPACE uses ultra-violet light to attract spiders, moths, beetles and other nocturnal cratures. Moths release chemical pheromones to attract mates and consequently "paint" the piece, while spiders will spin webs adding their own contribution to the work.
SPACE studio artist Carolyn Thompson will run a drawing workshop in the theme Wild Hackney, playing with ideas of living in Hackney, from its parks, canals and hidden wildlife to its community culture, street life and architecture. Drawing materials - paper, pencils, coloured pens, graphite, etc - will be provided. Throughout the day, local Djs will be supplying musical entertainment while graffity artsist create pieces that reflect the theme. BUG PARTY will take place in the outdoor covered courtyard at SPACE.
At 5pm, Brandon Ballangée will lead an urban bug hunt into the surrounding locality to discover the insect life of Hackney.
The Big Draw is a month-long celebration of drawing hosted by over 1000 venues across the UK. The programme's aim is to promote the art and act of drawing for all audience and age groups.
